On Record Store Day, fans are buying vinyl to support struggling stores

Even in the era of smartphones and digital music players, true enthusiasts recognize the unique charm of vinyl records.

Every year, music fans, artists, and record stores worldwide come together for Record Store Day. Originally scheduled for Saturday, this year’s event was postponed due to the pandemic. In its place, the organizers launched the #RSDFillTheGap campaign, encouraging music lovers to “buy a record missing from their collection” to celebrate while supporting record stores affected by the crisis.

“We all look forward to reconnecting with the world and sharing space with others again,” said The Big Moon, Record Store Day UK ambassadors. “If record stores and music are part of your life and you can spend, please support them so they’re there for you when life returns to normal.”

Record Store Day is typically the most profitable day of the year for independent record stores. But with the international event canceled and physical stores closed due to the pandemic, many shops are struggling to stay afloat. Fortunately, most are still selling vinyl and CDs online.

To help fans locate and support their nearest record store, the organization encouraged the use of OfficialCharts.com.

“Record Store Day is a global event involving countless people and small businesses. Over the past weeks, as information changed daily—and sometimes hourly—we carefully weighed every option,” said Record Store Day UK in a statement. “There’s no perfect solution, but we believe rescheduling is the best choice.”
